JOTS FROM OLD JAKE
SHRINK WISDOM

Professor of Psychiatry, Thomas Szasz, once said, �If you talk to God, you are praying. If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia!�
How misleading these people of �intellect� are to the uninformed and/or inquisitive minds of the na�ve persons who do not have strong faith in Jesus. The Good Shepherd said that His sheep know His voice. How can the sheep know His voice unless He talks to them?
I am reminded of an occurrence that happened to me not long after I started working for the Department of Correction. I worked in different jobs from day to day. One such job required escorting an inmate to the one of the counselors� office and then waiting outside the office until the shrink was done with the inmate. While waiting this particular day the office next to the one my charge was in was a Shrink who was setting behind her desk just twiddling her thumbs waiting for her next appointee to arrive. We struck up a conversation and I asked her if it was true that they were supposed to help staff as well as the inmates. She said sure and then inserted, �Why do you need help?� I said, �well I don�t think so� when I pray to God I get answers!� She said, �If you keep talking like that I will have to send you to the State Hospital!� I replied, �Why? Do they need help too?� She said something like, �Oh just get out of here!�
During the following years I had occasion to meet her in passing but never to say more than hello or just to nod acknowledgement that we knew each other. A few years later we had occasion to get on the elevator at Headquarters at the same time with one other man. The power went out as we were between floors and we were stuck. It was total darkness. She went into panic. The other guy and I tried to get her to calm down but she was screaming at the top of her voice. After about 20 minutes she finally calmed down and we told her that they were working on the problem and we would be ok. A few minutes later the lights came back on and the elevator started again. She was curled up in a ball in the corner of the elevator, white as a sheet of paper. The other guy and I were standing in the same spot we were in when the lights went out.
When I took psychology in College the professor told us that the reason most people who major in physiology do so is because they recognize a problem within themselves and are trying to find the solution to solving their own psychic dilemma. After having been acquainted with many since then, I tend to believe that he spoke the truths in that instant.
After I returned to the Lord and received the power of the Holy Spirit on my life I encountered many persons who were oppressed or possessed by satanic forces and were need of deliverance. This only reinforced in my mind that the Gospel of Jesus was real and the Truth is in the Holy Bible and Word of God.
I believe that the greatest real advances and discoveries that has been made by psychiatry in the past were written more that two thousand years ago in the books of the Old Testament. They still have a lot more to discover� if only they would go to the source� The Word of God!
