JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

BEAUTY IS FROM THE HEART:

Sunday, Dec. 02, 2007 - 12:55 p.m.

1 Peter 3:3-4 Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing; but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.

Have you ever, I know you have, met someone who is beautiful to look at but when they open their mouth they loose all of that beauty? The same may be true if just by being around them a while and their actions are disgusting. The scripture tells us that from the abundance of our heart our mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks. I believe that the analogy also applies to our body language. We can put as much paint or expensive garb on our old frame but the person inside will show our true person to everyone.

I have seen people who will paint over wood frames that have dry-rot to make a place look good for selling. The paint will not last on such a surface and will peal within a year or so. The rot comes through looking worse than before. That is why it is so important to work on the renewing of the heart; getting that heart to line up with the Lord; purpose in your heart to be all that you can be for the Lord; doing that which is acceptable and right in the sight of the Lord. Also be ready to answer queries as to your faith. Not necessarily to defend your faith, but to express why you believe.

1 Peter 3:15-16 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear: having a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good manner of life in Christ.

How many people who call themselves Christians can really state the basis of their belief? I know of some who will say that they live by the golden rule. They believe that by being a good person they are saved. I venture to say that most of those people would not truly like to be treated in the same manner they have treated others in the past. However to discuss such a matter with these persons would end up in meaningless argument.

Good questions to have answers for would include: Where did the Bible come from? How do we know it is the authentic Word of God? You could spend a lifetime just researching answers for these questions. I assure you though, the deeper you get into the research the more interesting it is, and the greater you desire to know more will be. Also the more authentic you will realize the Bible is.
