JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

KOINONIA:

Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007 - 4:10 a.m.

A word that has a meaning with much depth is Koinonia: koy-nohn-ee'-ah; partnership, i.e. (literally) participation, or (social) intercourse, or (pecuniary) benefaction:--(to) communicate(-ation), communion, (contri-)distribution, fellowship. It is an expression of the relationship of believers with each other as well as with the Lord. Koinonia is used twenty times in eighteen verses of the New Testament.

The King James Version translates it as:

Fellowship ~ 12 times ~ associating with others with a common interest in regards to that common interest.

Contribution ~ 1 time ~ the sharing of self and intrinsic goods with the others of common interest as above.

Communion ~ 4 times ~ the sharing of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance of Him.

Distribution ~ 1 time ~ cheerfully giving to further the spread of the Gospel.

Communication ~ 1 time ~ sharing the good things Christ has done for you.

Communicate ~ 1 time. Let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But do good to communicate these things.

The overall understanding of the meaning has to do with sharing. Sharing our Love (agape) our experiences, our intrinsic increase, our helpfulness of the poor, our support of the ministers and gospel teachers, and our Gifts of the Spirit as given to us by the Holy Spirit. I have heard I said by some scholars that if you have been given a gift of the Spirit and are not using it in a fellowship that you are cheating the Body of Christ or Church. I dont know how fast I hold that analogy but it does seem to have some merit. A gift that is unused is truly going to waste. And since the gifts are given for the edification of the church, and they are not benefiting from that gift because it is withheld, I can see how that would be considered as cheating the church our of a blessing.

The scriptures listed under references are the scriptures mentioned above and are all from the King James Version.
