Propitation ~ Mercy-seat

Romans 3:24-26 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Propitation: [hilasterion /hil�as�tay�ree�on/] n n. From a derivative of 2433; TDNT 3:318; TDNTA 362; GK 2663; Two occurrences; AV translates as �propitiation� once, and �mercyseat� once.
1 relating to an appeasing or expiating (atoning), having placating or expiating force, expiatory; a means of appeasing or expiating, a propitiation.
� 1A used of the cover of the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies, which was sprinkled with the blood of the expiatory victim on the annual day of atonement (this rite signifying that the life of the people, the loss of which they had merited by their sins, was offered to God in the blood as the life of the victim, and that God by this ceremony was appeased and their sins expiated); hence the lid of expiation, the propitiatory.

Propitiation and Mercy seat are names for the same thing.
Mercy-seat in the Old Testament: kapporeth kap-po'-reth; a lid (used only of the cover of the sacred Ark):--mercy seat.
Exodus 25:22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.
The text above this verse describes the blue print for the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. The �mercy-seat� is made of pure gold and is a cover for the Ark. In those days only the High Priest ever got to go into the Holy of Holies to visit the Ark and that was only once per year. The Ark of the Covenant is a likeness of the real thing which is in heaven and is now being visited by our High Priest, who is atoning our transgressions constantly. Because of His Sacrificial Blood that He shed for our atonement we are made justified in the Eyes of Our Father in Heaven.
Interesting study� much more depth and much more to know later. It just goes to show you� just how powerful Agape Love is.
