JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

The Owners Manual

Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 - 2:19 p.m.

Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Patience = (hupomone) perseverance
Comfort = (paraklesis) encouragement
Hope = (elpis) Faith about the future

He who has no hope of eternity has not purpose in time. ~Thomas Carlyle~
 Where is there hope outside of the Word of God?
 Antidote for fear: Christs Love ~I will be with you, for thats who I am

Some bible scholars say that whenever you read something in the bible that has an extraneous detail it is called a ramous, meaning having branches to greater insight. It is a good basis to start study for something deeper.
 The precision of the Scriptures demonstrate their supernatural origin.
 Once that fact has been discovered for yourself it changes your entire attitude toward their reliability and your own destiny
 This is too important to delegate to others.

Romans 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
 God of = objective genitive: God who gives
 Patience = (hupomone) perseverance
 Continually bearing up under a burden;
o As a slave carrying a heavy burden
o Enduring forever.
 Steadfastness in the face of adversities.
 We have all heard the term, When the going gets tough, the tough get going! It has been attributed to various different people over the years. But I believe it is only a paraphrase of the Apostle Paul. However, we can apply that to our lives by the Holy Spirit, not some macho attitude of the flesh
 Our optimism is based on Gods truth, not the flesh.
Romans 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The ultimate purpose of this unity was that: with one mind and mouth (a unity of inward feeling and outwart expression) they would glorify (to keep glorifying) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the final purpose of Christians individually and the church corporately: Romans 15:7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

We were accepted by the Lord Jesus when we were:

 Powerless ~ Romans 5:6
 Ungodly ~ Romans 5:6
 Sinners ~ Romans 5:8
 Enemies ~ Romans 5:10

Romans 5:6-10 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

 We can learn to love anybody if we are at the foot of the cross!

VERSE FOR THIS ENTRY!

2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory;
