JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

Nehushtan

Monday, Nov. 05, 2007 - 3:58 p.m.

What is your Nehushtan nekh-oosh-tawn? I says to my self, Self, who know what that means? Buckle your straps, here we go!

Remember back when the Children of Israel were belly-aching about God and Moses? God doesnt put up with a whole bunch of bad-mouthing Him or His servants so he plagued them with fiery serpents.

Numbers 21:6-9 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

I had always wondered why God had Moses make an image for them to look at They had already been in trouble for making a golden calf. But later I realized that it was a typology of the coming Savior.

John 3:14-16 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Beholding the serpent let them live a physical life. Beholding the Savior on the cross, Who was lifted up allows one to live an eternal life.

Now you say, SO? Well it seems that the brazen serpent was thereafter placed in the temple and people started worshiping it

2 Kings 18:1-4 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

The typology of the Christ had become a symbol of worship. Now I say again what is your symbol of worship? God is quite adamant about not having any other items or gods before Him. I wonder is the cross in some cases has not become such a symbol. How about some one who has been a true believer in God but is held up and honored above their granted esteem? Some people pray or sing praises to esteemed individuals Is this not going off the track of worship to God and His Son Jesus Christ? I have known people who would travel miles and hours just to go see some Man of God minister. Is that Man of God their Nehushtan?

Or how about an old bible that is worn out and totally useless, you cant read it without it falling apart? You feel like you cant dispose of it because it would be sacrilegious to do so. Is that your Nehushtan?

I believe that we should have respect for the office people hold and show respect to the people in that office. But, to esteem them above anyone else and to worship or burn incense to them is idolatry.

We need to do as King Hezekiah did and break down those objects of worship and dispose of our Nehushtan!

It is rewarding to feel you have done a job well, but if you feel you have done it perfectly... well feelings do lie! ~unknown~
