JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

Double Anointing

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007 - 10:26 p.m.

Most folks can tell you the story of how Elisha, after discovering that he was to be the replacement for Elijah, stuck to Elijah like crazy glue to your fingers. He also asked to receive a double portion of Elijah's anointing.

We have always considered Elijah to be the Great Prophet of God in the Old Testament and assumed Elisha to be second in status. I believe, if a person were to do the research, they would find that twice as many miracles were performed through the calling of Elisha than that of Elijah.

None the less they were both great prophets of the Lord and served God to the fullest. Grant it Elisha was not transformed or caught up in a flaming chariot like Elijah.

It is interesting to me to note that after Elisha received Elijahs mantle that he went back across the river on dry ground just the same way the both of them crossed to begin with. The people, who did not witness the ascension of Elijah, scoffed at such a thing happening and some of the students of the local prophet school in the city of Bethel came out to poke fun at Elisha. There was a group of about 40 loud mouth students jeering Elisha: 2 Kings 2:23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. They were making fun of him because they didnt believe that the Lord took Elijah.

Anyway Elisha turned to them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And following that two big mama bears came out of the woods and tore about 40 students a new way to look at life

2 Kings 2:24 He looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Yahweh. Two female bears came out of the woods, and mauled forty-two of those youths.

You will note that the KJV says the youngsters were children. However, the word children in this text in Hebrew is: na`ar, nah'-ar which means youth from a toddler to a young adult.

One of the lessons from this event to me warns us to be careful how we treat the person who is called and anointed to teach and preach the Word of the Lord. It is one thing to be skeptical of what is being taught but yet another thing of our self righteous pride to scoff aloud or put the person down.

2 Peter 3:2-7 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

VERSE FOR THIS ENTRY!

Ecclesiastes 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
