JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

STANDING ON THE PROMISES

Tuesday, Jul. 24, 2007 - 12:30 p.m.

In Isaiah 36, king Hezekiah of Judah was being threatened by Sennacherib king of Assyria. Ole Hezekiah was doing his best to get along with his enemy. He gave most of the riches of the land to the Assyrian King just to keep him out of Judah. Sounds like some of our modern politicians Right?

Just like today, the king of Assyria kept pushing his threat! He sent his main military man, Rabshakeh, (Rab) to take the last city in Judah from Hezekiah. Rab had a strategy up his sleeve that would break down the moral of Judah and make it easier for him to walk in without resistance from Hezekiah. After the peace talks between the two; Rab sent a message to Hezekiah saying that God was on the side of Assyria and a bunch of other propaganda! Sound like today?

Hezekiah remembered the promise of God, particularly:

Isaiah10:27 (KJV) And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

So when King Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

He started to remind God of His promise in Isaiah 10:27. Isaiah 37:15-20 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries. And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

Cutting a long story short, after all Hezekiahs lamenting and praying, the Lord sent His message: Isaiah 37:32-35 (KJV) For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it. By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD. For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

The Lord was not going to do this for Hezekiah because he was such a deserving king. The Lord was doing it because He had promised David that his seed would set on the throne!

Then the results: Isaiah 37:36-38 (KJV) Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

Guess what? History does repeat itself! You can see that God never reneges on His word. Jesus is returning to rein in Zion! Isaiah 51:11 (KJV) Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
Psalms 48:1-2 (KJV) Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

Verse for today:

Psalms 91:9-11 (KJV) Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

and

Psalms 31:1-3 (KJV) ... In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

Ulterior thought:

Do you remember when everyone in the family sat down and had breakfast together? Honest! It really happened!
