JOTS FROM OLD JAKE

HUNGER AND THIRST:

Thursday, Apr. 26, 2007 - 3:09 p.m.

(Matthew 5:6 KJV) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

This is the fourth BeAtitude from the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5. This hunger and thirst alludes to the earnest desire to become more righteous.

Hunger peinao: to toil for daily subsistence, crave, etal.

Thirst dipsao: a spiritual thirst.

Righteousness dikaiosune: a right relationship, or justification between God and man!

I believe that you cant have that attitude unless you are drawn by the Holy Spirit. But you can quench the spirit and ignore His leading. Like Paul said to the Corinthians the spirit is subject to the prophets.

Fibber McGee (really not a fibber but is J. Vernon, and he did teach the Word of God) said that the Beatitudes are just that BE-Attitudes not DO-Attitudes! He goes on to say, The Beatitudes present goals which the child of God wants to realize in his own life, but he cant do it on his own. You may have heard of the preacher who had a message entitled Meekness and How I Attained It. He said that he hadnt delivered his message yet, but as soon as he got an audience big enough, he was going to give it! Well, I have a notion that he had long since lost his meekness. Meekness can only be a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

(1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Todays memory verse!

(Isaiah 29:14 KJV) Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

OOPs missed a day somewhere?

(Psalms 103:16 KJV) For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. (Psa 103:17 KJV) But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; (18) To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. (19) The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. (20) Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. (21) Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. (22) Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

May You Be Blessed by the Holy Spirit to Overflowing!
